Gerry Cornelius is a Londoner and graduated from Durham University before studying conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Sir Colin Davis and the State Conservatory in St Petersburg with Ilya Musin. He is winner if the Henry Wood, August Manns and Philharmonia Chorus scholarships for conducting. On returning to the UK he trained worked for three seasons with British Youth Opera and was appointed conductor to the orchestras of Morley College where he directed the first Tippett Memorial Festival. Since then he has been increasingly involved in performances of opera and all forms of music theatre. This year he has conducted for the orchestra of the Teatro Real in Madrid, English National Ballet, The RuhrTriennale’s acclaimed production of Die Soldaten in Germany. He has been a regular member of the music staff for Aldeburgh-Almeida opera productions and was for eight years the music director of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. He will return to Germany to conduct for the opera festival in Bochum and is currently performing with English National Ballet in the London’s Coliseum. Otherwise he divides his time between conducting and coaching, both in the UK and abroad and lives in London’s East End. December 2006 |
